In this video, you’ll learn how to create an abstract figure from a nonobjective painting using watercolor techniques on a YUPO® surface. What is YUPO® and why paint on it? Mark gives the advantages and disadvantages of using watercolor and gouache on YUPO®, along with various techniques and materials for applying paint and texture to your surface. You’ll learn how important “play time” is to exploring all the possibilities for creating beautiful underpaintings, as well as how to begin designing the painting in a non-objective way first, before you turn it into a figure, taking your cues from the design of the first layers of paint.
With this workshop, you’ll learn how to
Take advantage of YUPO®
Use a limited palette of watercolors and gouaches
Play with stencils, stamps and other materials to create textures
Apply watercolor paint smoothly and evenly, without creating brush strokes
Add and subtract paint from the design quickly and easily
Fix “mistakes” and correct your design
Create strong design elements in your abstract watercolor paintings
Layer transparent and opaque gouaches to create shapes and patterns
Turn a non-objective painting into an abstract figure
Create a sense of objects floating over one another with drop shadows
Use watermedia techniques such as “ghosting” and creating gradations

The presentation did not compel me to watch intently, as I have others. The end result was pleasing. I wish he would have offered ideas as to the different ways to make each layer unique to the individual watching the video. His delivery seemed self absorbed, which lost my attention.

Mehaffey has a friendly, happy disposition that, in addition to him painting his dynamic and exciting artworks, is a real pleasure to watch. I learned so much here! I am struggling to keep myself seated. I can't wait to get started. A wonderful teacher and a great workshop video!!!

Great introduction to using Yupo!

Great demonstration class. Mr. Mehaffey introduces many techniques and materials. I have worked a little with yupo in short class sessions, but could not see the possibilities and fun until viewing this video. He also encourages practice, experimentation and most importantly - play.

I really liked it up to the point it got so chalky... what was the point to put this brilliant underpainting and textures just to cover them all with this flat boring tone in the end?!

Ordered my Yupo and can't wait to start.. Fun Video with loads of tips and very instructional...

I am not sure what I expected from this video, but I am certainly inspired by his style, his medium, and his teaching. I am ordering some YUPO today! I love watercolor and I love abstract, what better than to combine the two with vivid color. Thank you Mark for an awesome workshop.

Mark Mehaffey's teaching experience provides a foundation of clear communication, honest encouragement and many, many explanations for the decisions he makes while developing a painting. I've watched and enjoyed all his other videos and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I ordered my watercolors and gouache today!
