Drawing Together Episode 24: Peck-ture Perfect!
this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
I’ll admit that I’m a bit intimidated by this subject, but this is no time to be chicken about it. How are we going to handle all these feathers?! If you’d like, follow along with this reference image: https://bit.ly/3dwcR7t
Today, I’m working with:
- Canson Drawing Paper
- Vine Charcoal
- Charcoal Pencil
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
In this session, we’ll cover:
- Drawing a Chicken
- Drawing Feathers
- Realistic drawing techniques for pencil and charcoal
- Shading Techniques
- Managing detail
Love these quick sketches. I love the way you use the side of the pencil and shadow out parameters. I’m getting ready to visit and sketch at some farms and animal rescues in the middle of the state of Florida and wanted some 2dimensional practice before I go. Thanks. Barbara
I couldn’t upload the giraffe to the corresponding episode.
I used graphite pencils for the giraffes.

Here’s my chicken. Thank you Scott for taking the time to look at the drawings during “break”.
Kind regards Pia
Here’s my attempt of chicky
Never thought I’d be drawing a chicken. Well, it was fun! I did it while the video was live and used only the little image on the side so I don’t go crazy trying to add all the details.
This was harder than I thought! Omg feathers…! Stopped fussing with it after a while.
This is really great!
My first chicken and on Strathmore tan toned paper! I also tried to keep the drawing to class time with Scott. The more I think about what I am drawing the more I mess up nit pickin’.
I think I got a little dark but the overall feeling of the piece came out pretty good, I think. Really enjoying these sessions.
I let my chicken go(don’t worry…she’s free range) with what I had done in class with Scott. I start with a blank sheet of paper and work with him and not do a lot to it afterwards.
