  1. I finally got a long tip pencil sharpener, which made all the difference when using my white charcoal pencil. I’ve done quite a few of these videos, but now I’m ready to do more with white charcoal. This was a fun one.

I used Canson Mi-Teintes gray paper, cropped a bit from 9″x12″.

  2. I loved doing this dog probably because it’s my best animal drawing so far. I really enjoy the charcoal on gray toned paper with the white highlights—very dramatic. Another great lesson. Thank you!

  3. Hi Scott,
I hope this worked as it is the first time I’ve uploaded a drawing! I drew the dog using your suggested materials and paper and would welcome any critique. Looking at the other drawings has been so helpful, as I can especially see the detail I missed, etc. I so enjoy your classes and guidance!
Stay well, and best wishes for the holidays!

  4. This was great fun. Thanks Scott. I appreciate all that you show us in how to accomplish a drawing. I used vine charcoal, charcoal pencils, and a white charcoal pencil.

  5. I am finally able to join in on drawing sessions. Really enjoyed Wednesday’s class. Not thrilled with outcome – do need to get larger paper. This is 5.5 x 8.5 pulled out of sketch book. It is Strathmore gray. I do think I will do again.

  6. Beautiful work! May I ask what paper you use? I did use Strathmore gray paper but it is only 5.5 x 8.5, which I pull out of ringed pad so I lose a bit of paper when taping to board. I know Scott has stated that drawing larger better so going to see about getting other paper. Thanks!

  7. Hi Scott, couldn’t attend the live stream unfortunately, but completed drawing today using Derwent medium, dark and white charcoal pencils, and grey Strathmore paper. The paper I have has a heavy texture, and white charcoal pencil was not really working well. Broke it twice and shortened it by 1/2 inch. Would you please describe what kind of Strathmore paper you used, smooth or textured?
Thank you for the demo. 🙂

  8. I really enjoyed drawing this dog! I had fun with the fur, though I probably could have backed off the details a bit, but I live for details! The mouth was tough… I didn’t get it quite right. Thanks for answering my question about drawing from photos. I liked your answer, and it made sense to me. I seem to draw from photos mostly, though I have some life drawing experience… and it is harder for me! But what can you do when you don’t have people available/willing to pose for portraits? And not enough $ to hire a model?

  9. Once again, many thanks Scott for a great session. This is my 5th session, and enjoying very much. Paper used was DeSerres Mix Media 9 X 12 160 gsm, and using Staedtler Luminograph drawing pencil set, Tombow Mono eraser, along with gum and hard erasers. No white charcoal, so used Prismacolor Premier white and a white extra fine point Sharpie. Stay safe for the holidays !
