this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
Getting back to working in charcoal, I’m drawing an orange today. Work from your own still life or follow along using this reference image: https://bit.ly/3a668it
Today, I’m working with:
- White Rag Paper (Hahnemuhle “Sketch”)
- Charcoal Pencils
- Vine Charcoal
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
In this session, we’ll cover:
- How to draw in charcoal
- Shading techniques
- Creating texture
- Subtle value control
Here’s my orange.
Maybe more detail is needed in the sections, and white lines for the sections I think should be less straight. Liked the outer white edge of the larger half

Still don’t know what it is that I don’t like…I think my membranes are too big and substantial…
I am not painting as you go along but using your posted classes, therefore I can backtrack and pause the class. I have enjoyed these so very much, it has help get through the coronavirus shut down. I look forward to doing them.
Oranges were challenging! I really love your tutorials, Scott! They are helping me on my way to drawing daily…I’m almost there! Thank you so much!!
Thank you for posting this! I’m glad to hear the classes are helpful. This looks great! You are controlling the charcoal well!
Classes have been very helpful with drawing techniques. Also, the ellipse section of your perspective course was extremely helpful. Always struggled with ellipses and now understanding the perspective center has really help me improve.
thanks
