I’ve had more than one request to demonstrate another flower drawing so I thought this would be a good opportunity to try drawing a sunflower! Follow along using this reference image: https://bit.ly/3d5eZmz
Today, I’m working with:
- Hahnemuhle Cotton Rag Paper
- Vine Charcoal
- Charcoal Pencils
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
In this session, we’ll cover:
- Drawing a Sunflower
- Realistic drawing techniques for Charcoal
- Negative Drawing Techniques
- Shading Techniques
- Managing detail
This is about the best I could do with the sunflower
This is such a great lesson for learning how to create depth tones and values.
Thank you
Incredible exercise, loved creating it! Thanks Scott!
Incredible exercise, loved creating it! Thanks, Scott!
Had a hard time getting used to vine charcoal. I would wipe it too much and totally loose the image. Happy with the petals on the left side, more than the right
I appreciate that your classes are available after the “live” class. This was the first of the recorded classes that I tried. And my first attempt with charcoal.
Beautiful!
Thank you!
This is a beautiful interpretation!
I love the expression in this!
I love seeing these two versions! Thank you for sharing this! They each express the light beautifully.
This looks great! Thank you for sharing this!
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing it!
Beautiful work! The light is wonderful here. It’s particularly challenging in the center of the flower, but you’ve expressed it well!
First time using charcoal in many years because of your motivation and inspiration! I used what I had at the moment Strathmore Multi Media. These live streams are so much fun. Thank you so very much!
Used a 3b for the majority of this one. Negative space could probably be darker, but I had fun trying. Thank you again!
Here is my version of the Sunflower. Another wonderful tutorial!! Thanks
Tried this one twice, with graphite and then charcoal. Very different results. Thanks for the videos. I’m getting a lot of practice.
I love it!
I tried a regular drawing paper for this one and liked how the charcoal behaved better than normal. I DID note that it didn’t want to lay down on each other(pressed over vine) very well, but I liked it better than mixed media paper. I’m pretty happy with mine except once I stepped back after class I realized I’d drawn a little face into my center. HAHAHA! I LOVE starting with a fresh sheet of paper and drawing with Scott. I think it’s a great exercise.
I know you said it’s ok if it’s not an exact copy. Mine is definitely an interpretation. I had more trouble with the angles than I thought I would.
